Hello! If you are a resident of Lobethal and you are keen to know more about the Illuminart projects in 2010, this page is for you.

Hello! If you are a resident of Lobethal and you are keen to know more about the Illuminart projects in 2010, this page is for you. We have been posting out letter box drops but we know that not everyone gets them (and sometimes they can end up in the recycling) so this section provides updates on what we are up to.

The projects described on this web site are all happening from the 13th – 23rd December, to coincide with the Lights of Lobethal festival 2010. Many people are already involved in some way but if you are keen and thinking about supporting the projects, then certainly do contact us.

The projects we are working on in 2010 include:

Bicycle powered Lantern Workshops

Lobethal Lanterns

Solar Grove Sites

Window Projections

Giant Lanterns

BICYCLE POWERED LANTERN WORKSHOPS
These will be held at the Illuminart stall at 20 Main St, Lobethal, and will be held from 7-10 PM from the 13th to 23rd of December. The stall will be run by Victoria Harrison and the other artists, and Anne Griffiths will also run some daytime sessions.

Our aim is to give families a new, hands on, creative experience during the festival, and the best part is that you get to create a lantern to take home. Not just a souvenir, but a fun memory and way to practise your hand-craft skills with your friends or family. The lanterns being made here are a different design to the Lobethal Lantern but will be equally funky – especially as you’ll add your own individual touch. The cost involved is $15 per lantern, with discounts for additional lanterns. Bookings are recommended (but not essential), call Victoria: 08 8389 6249 or 0400 099 926 for info or to make a booking.

We hope you will let visiting friends and family know about these workshops, and come and make one yourself.

LOBETHAL LANTERN DISPLAYS
If you have a shop or home along Main Street, then you probably have already been invited to display the unique and colourful Lobethal Lanterns during the daytime. Each one is lovingly hand made by local schoolchildren and community groups, working with artist Victoria Harrison. These wonderful lanterns are unique to Lobethal and set the Lights of Lobethal apart from other lighting festivals and show Lobethals community spirit and creativity.

Our aim with these amazing lanterns has been to create a distinctive and unique feature to Lobethal, that can be used at any time of year as a unique decoration. The lanterns are designed to be hung outdoors during the daytime and at night, illuminated by renewable energy powered LEDs.

If you have an interest in having a go at making your own Lobethal Lantern, you can follow the pattern that has been provided for the Lobethal community. They are extraordinarily gorgeous, and are a feature that can decorate your home and business for festive occasions; there’s plenty of scope to “make it your own”.

SOLAR GROVE SITES
Some local home owners with Solar power or with a solar pack borrowed from us, are showing special displays that are powered by renewable energy. Its a fun way to learn about green power and 12V technology, and also show visitors to the festival that Lobethal people are innovators. Illuminart are offering our own prize for best “Solar Grove” display in 2010.

If you have Solar Power or are interested in renewable energy, then we would love to invite you to be a Solar Grove site too. These sites are simply identified as offering a display that is powered by renewable energy, and we will work with you to set this up. We are encouraging this as well by offering our own prize for best “Solar Grove” display in 2010. Contact Cindi to confirm your interest and we will provide you with the details on what to do.

WINDOW PROJECTIONS
Thanks to local storytellers and historians who have given plenty of inspiration and resources to create fun multimedia projection about Lobethal. The ingenious and playful animations celebrate the amazing textile industry that has been a big part of Lobethal’s history.

GIANT LANTERNS
These have been built from recycled fabrics by local artists Anne Griffiths, Judith O’Brien, and Karen Fennell, taking a playful approach with textiles. Look for the lanterns on the Bierhaus lawn.

This year our aim has been to decorate and enhance Lobethal, and attract visitors to come and enjoy the beauty of Lobethal during the day, and to enjoy some of these sights on foot. We have been really really pleased and grateful to have support of Lobethal residents, the Lights committee, and of the funding organisations who have all ensured that this could be possible.

If you would like to contact us for more info, you can! Here’s how:

Victoria on 08 8389 6249 or 0400 099 926 > for bookings at the Lantern makers stall, and liaison about the Lobethal Lanterns workshops and main street hanging sites

Megan Collins on megan @ illuminart.com.au or 0416 571 970 > for liaison about the Window Projections or general info about research or the projects

Cindi Drennan on info @ illuminart.com.au or 0412 534 999 > for general info and liaison about the Solar Grove Sites.

Introducing our team:
Local artist Victoria Harrison (from Charleston), has been leading many community workshops teaching how to hand-make the Lobethal Lanterns. Victoria is also working with artists Anne Griffiths, Judith O’Brien and Karen Fennell to run a lantern making stall during the Lights of Lobethal festival.
Megan Collins (from Winstow) is working in the role of researcher and project coordinator, and to assist with promotion.
Cindi Drennan (Quorn SA & Medlow Bath NSW) is a Multimedia artist & Creative Producer who began developing projects with the Lobethal community in 2009.
Also working closely with us have been the Lights of Lobethal committee, and many residents who have been extraordinarily helpful and supportive of these new ideas.

Illuminart Productions Pty Ltd is a multimedia arts company that works with communities to develop innovative and sustainable multimedia projects. Over the last 18 months we have been working with Lobethal residents and the Lights committee, to develop new projects that can be enjoyed by residents and visitors during the Lights of Lobethal. Themes suggested by you have included using Solar power, showing local history, holding activities for families to do together, and work to support local projects and businesses. We have been encouraged to develop displays for the Main St, and for this, many residents have been involved in hand-making the signature Lobethal Lanterns that we hope will enhance Lobethal and be appreciated all year round. We have incorporated video projection, textile crafts, and LED lighting in the projects to create new applications of traditional and modern technology, and support the existing, long running and successful Lobethal Lights projects that everyone knows well, with new inspirations.

This year the Lights of Lobethal Festival features new projections and lantern displays to enhance the long running festival and transform the main street. Local residents and artists have been working alongside multimedia artist Cindi Drennan and the Illuminart creative team on projects ranging from giant lanterns that children can get inside, to workshops to make your own lantern using bicycle-powered sewing machines, and a string of interesting new displays by local textile artists and animated window projections by Illuminart. These can be seen from the 13th to the 23rd of December (the festival lights up on Sunday December 12th and continues until the 31st of December 2010.)

After dark, animated window projection displays can be seen at three sites along Main Road. These are best experienced as you stroll along, from dusk onwards. These colourful and quirky animations are based on scenes from Lobethal’s history, transformed by digital media artists into colourful projections – and on some nights these animations will have extra features that clever kids will discover they can play with!

The themes of these new projects have been inspired by Lobethal itself, which has a long background of self-sufficiency and traditional textile crafts. History and photos have been collected from residents and local historians by Megan Collins (heritage consultant for Illuminart), and these have been made available to all the artists working on the projects. The resulting colourful displays are hoped to give locals and residents alike a new experience and appreciation of the peaceful township.

The three main sites for Projection Art by Illuminart this year, are the windows of the Adelaide Hills Business and Tourism Office near the intersection of Woodside and Main Road, the Auto Garage at 47 Main Road, and the Old Service Station at upper Main Road.
